I had one major concern getting into mirrorless cameras. While many photographers liked the small size, I was actually concerned about it. Having a smaller camera would be great for hiking into the backcountry, or maybe wandering the streets of a European city. But for most of my photography I like a larger grip, and I really like a vertical grip. When the Z7II was announced, and it’s fully functioning vertical grip MB-N11, I knew this would be a great option for me.
The original Z6 and Z7 did have a grip, which gave you more battery life. But this grip didn’t have an autofocus button or shutter release in the vertical position. But the MB-N11 grip for the Z7II had both. I have been using this grip for about a month now, and I am very pleased with the performance.
First, this grip takes two of the EN-EL15 batteries, basically doubling your battery life. This is a real benefit. Mirrorless battery life if getting better, but it is not like shooting a DSLR all day and never worrying about the battery. One main reason I got the MB-N11 is I photograph night skies and the northern lights a lot (in very cold weather). Extended battery life is something I need.
Next, the grip really feels good in the hands. I’ve found some grips just never feel good on cameras, but the MB-N11 fits nice and snug, and is very comfortable in the hand. In the vertical position the autofocus and shutter button are right where you would expect them to be, no searching around with your fingers. Dials are in the right place to adjust shutter and aperture.
One really nice feature is the battery compartment design. You can switch batteries one at a time, so if you were in the middle of a long exposure you don’t have to power off the camera. I also have used the second battery in the grip to power my other Z camera if I don’t have a spare with me.
One other thing I like about this grip is the larger camera size balances much better with my long wildlife lenses (like a 600mm F4). Right now I like using the grip when I am using the Z 70-200mm F2.8, the balance is perfect. If you like a smaller body size, then maybe this grip isn’t for you. But if you like a larger camera body with vertical grip, you will like using the MB-N11 on your Z6II or Z7II.
